The most glamorous of esthetician jobs is cosmetology. In addition to the obvious areas of study for a cosmetologist such as make-up application and skin care; bacteriology, anatomy, and physiology broadens the skills for a cosmetologist. Retail specialists, color stylists, spa managers and consultants also fall into this field of esthetician jobs.

As a cosmetologist, you can work in a spa, salon, make-up counter at a department store, cruise ship or at a hotel that has its own salon. You can also work independently and own your own beauty salon. A shift towards the business end of these esthetician jobs is to become a beauty consultant or a marketing or purchasing manager.

A hairdresser not only does hair cutting and styling, but also does chemical treatments such as coloring, straightening, curling. Other treatments work to improve the condition of hair and scalp. Esthetician jobs in hair also must know how to give proper advice to the customer based on his individual hair and how to determine which style suits him best. As such, there is a lot of creativity involved in these esthetician jobs. A hairdresser can also work on wigs hair extensions. They can work in salons or for actors on film, television or stage.

Other esthetician jobs include the nail technicians. These technicians polish, shape, and make artificial nails. They also do pedicures as well, which entails the removal of dead skin and a foot message. Because of potential infections, it is important that as part of the nail technician’s job, instruments and work areas must be sanitized for each customer.

Medical estheticians work with dermatologists, plastic surgeons or as paramedical estheticians. This is a more advanced field of an esthetician as it requires a degree beyond the basic courses. Esthetician jobs in the medical field can be found in health related facilities, doctor’s offices or holistic treatment centers.
