Important Cosmetology Responsibilities

CosmetologyThe world of cosmetology includes various jobs or positions. Within each of these positions lie a multitude of cosmetology responsibilities, including health and safety issues, moral responsibilities, personal responsibilities and basic ethic responsibilities.

One of the most important cosmetology responsibilities is ensuring that the health and safety of your clients are protected at all times. This means that, as an individual, you must ensure that all state and county health and safety guidelines are met or exceeded. Such responsibilities include ensuring that all areas are kept clean and then sanitized. This includes chairs, hair wash basins, pedicure basins and tables, and any other areas you patrons may use. You must ensure that all single use items such as using combs, brushes, clippers, scissors or curlers are cleaned and sanitized before each use. Disinfectants, which are used to immerse items to sanitize, must be changed daily. All hard surface items which have multiple uses such as hair blowers and curling irons must be sanitized after each use with a spray sanitizer. It is your individual responsibility to ensure the safety of each of your patrons, and to protect their health.

Cosmetology responsibilities also include a personal responsibility. You are personally responsible for each person who sits in your chair. Verbal communication is extremely important. Listening is the biggest part of communication. You must ensure that you develop a relation of trust with each and every client. Beyond a personable relationship, you also have a moral and ethic responsibility towards each client. If there is a time when you have a client which you know you cannot morally or ethically provide services to, then at this point you should refer this patron to another cosmetologist or another salon.

Your cosmetology responsibilities began as soon as the patron sits in your chair. Ensure that you provide your client with the best possible service backed up with excellent health and safety practices, and courteous service supported by exceptional personal, moral and ethic practices.
