If you are interested in a career in cosmetology, you will be happy to know that you can begin your cosmetology education even while you are still teenager. In fact, many high schools offer cosmetology education curriculums as a part of their vocational education department. By offering programs in cosmetology education, young adults can obtain hours and credits towards their cosmetology career.
Most states require students to obtain 1500 hours of instruction from a beauty school or 1000 hours of instruction from a beauty school and 500 hours of instruction from a vocational cosmetology education program in a public high school before becoming employed in the field. Enrolling in a high school cosmetology education program is a great idea as it can cut the cost of your cosmetology education as much as one third. This is an excellent option for the individual who knows at an early age that he or she wants to enter into a cosmetology career.
The area of cosmetology you want to enter will determine the amount of instructional hours you will need to complete in order to find employment in this field. These hours must be obtained from a credited beauty school or high school vocational cosmetology education program. For instance, if you want to only be a manicurist only, you are only required to obtain around 600 hours of instruction depending on the state in which you live.
However, if you want to obtain a license as an operator you will be required to obtain the maximum 1500 hours of cosmetology education. This will allow you to not only cut and style hair, but will also allow you to provide facial treatments and manicures. Once you have obtained the required instructional hours, you will then be required to pass a written and practical exam at the State Board of Cosmetology.
In addition to the 1500 instructional hours your must also have a high school diploma or equivalent, be a minimum of 17 years, and submit an application with the application fees to be eligible to take the exams in your state.
